The planned exit has several components

A trader may say ‘my stop is there’ while referring to a chart level, an order instruction or a maximum intended loss. These are related but different statements. The level is part of the reasoning; the order has rules; the realised result depends on execution. Before placing an order, identify which statement you are making and where the actual product documentation describes how it will be handled.

What the regulator’s example establishes

FINRA explains that, for the stock stop orders it discusses, a triggered stop becomes a market order and can execute at a price different from the trigger. Stop-limit orders introduce a price condition but may not execute. [1] This is useful background about order mechanics. It should not be treated as the rulebook for every gold product or broker. The instrument, platform and applicable terms must be checked directly.

A hypothetical calculation

Suppose a plan assumes an exit at 100 but the eventual execution occurs at 98. For a position whose value changes by one unit per price unit, the difference is two units per position unit, before other costs. The example illustrates how an assumption affects the result; it does not predict slippage or describe any specific product. Product multipliers, currency conversion and fees may change the calculation.

Put the assumptions in the plan

Record the intended trigger, order type, position size and the execution assumptions used in the loss estimate. Then check the product terms for relevant limitations. If those terms are unclear, resolve the uncertainty before relying on the estimate. The purpose of this article is understanding, not selecting an exit level. A more complete review evaluates both the trading thesis and the mechanics through which the planned action is expected to occur.
