A historical result is a constructed result
Backtesting applies a specified strategy to past observations. Investor.gov identifies backtested performance as hypothetical rather than actual performance. [1] That distinction should remain visible beside every impressive result. The useful question is how the result was constructed: what information the rules used, what execution was assumed and which decisions were made after examining the data.
Make the assumptions inspectable
Record the instrument, data provider, period, timeframe and rule version. Explain the assumed treatment of missing observations and ambiguous order sequences. If two price levels are touched within one bar, the bar alone may not establish which was reached first. A simulation that silently chooses the favourable sequence can look precise while depending on information it does not possess.
Do not let optimisation become the explanation
Repeatedly changing rules after seeing results can produce a close fit to the chosen history. Preserve a record of the alternatives tried and separate development from evaluation on observations not used to choose the rules. Include costs and realistic execution assumptions. Execution costs and position size should be part of the enquiry, not decorations added after a headline return.
Read the evidence before the confidence
The Gold Trader’s Code provides a related book path into rules and trading decisions. Explore CYGURU.GOLD education and return to the written planning structure before treating a simulation as a reason to act. A useful report states the limitations clearly enough that another reader could challenge its assumptions. Its purpose is to learn what survives scrutiny, rather than to create the smoothest-looking account of the past.
